Fire Trucks in January

Reg Grouper may have the reputation as the redheaded stepchild of the gag grouper but that moniker is undeserved. They are great table fare and when you hook in to a big one, it’s like hooking into a firetruck that’s on its way to a 5 alarm blaze.

January is typically always a great month for fishing for these guys as they move their way into shallower water. We’ve been catching them on dead sardines and lie pinfish from 5-15 miles out this month. The action has been fast and the weather has been kind enough to cooperate most days.

The “Tip”

Water clarity is at it’s best this time of year s that means the fish can see better. The trick to getting these fish to eat is to lighten up your leader line and downsize your hooks.
